- Small wingless insects
- Have backward projecting spines
- Prefer warm temperatures (70-85 degrees F.)
- Transmit diseases like Plague, typhus and tape worms.
- Many species i.e. Cat flea and dog flea, Human flea, Oriental rat flea(mainly rats), Sticktight flea (poultry) etc
(a) Egg laid on host, in nest and will not stick. 200-400 per day and hatch 2 to several weeks
(b) Larva- Feeds on organic debris including feces of adult flea.
(c) Pupa- Develops to adult stage in cocoon covered with debrisand vibration often cause emergence. Last 7-14 days normally but may take several months to a year.
(d)Adult- Feeds on blood and may live several months without food. Most numerous on pets, in bedding etc
